cowpoke: noun

a) A cowboy (person who tends cattle on horseback)

b) A device used in 19th century, some of which were patented or farm made and used around the neck of cows and other livestock to prevent them from challenging fencing. The action of the device was to poke the cow when the device came in contact with the fence.
