To make a statement that is in error, to say incorrectly, have a slip of the tongue. Implies an unintentional error in speaking rather than an intentional lie.

The speaker misstated the year of his grandfathers birth by a hundred years, it was an honest mistake, how often does one speak of the 1800s?
