high-sticking

high-sticking
1. noun
A penalized action in the sport of ice hockey where a player knowingly or inadvertently raises (the hand-grip part of) his stick above shoulder level.
2. verb
<! "High-sticking" is the action of wielding the hockey stick in a manner that makes it appear more available as a weapon against the upper body or head, an ultimately threatening gesture, because the stick can be used in the game itself only on or near the ice and has no legitimate purpose being above shoulder height (except maybe for balance). "High-stick" is not used as a normally conjugatable verb in the games of ice hockey or field hockey or in any other manner that I know of. "High-sticking," rather than being a "present participle," may be called a "verbal noun," if that grammatically explains it better.
