heart attack

heart attack
a) An acute myocardial infarction caused by the sudden occurrence of coronary thrombosis, which obstructs the blood supply to the heart and leads to necrosis of heart muscle tissue. It is characterised by sudden severe chest pain often radiating to the shoulder, arm, or jaw, shortness of breath, nausea, and loss of consciousness, and is sometimes fatal.
b) Metaphorical extensions of that usage, for example: "That make of GPS is liable to have a heart attack if a pedestrian uses it walking along a route which is illegal to cars".
